The story of the first coding language begins in a time when computers, as we know them today, did not exist. Machines were mechanical, calculations were manual, and the idea of “writing code” was unheard of. Yet, the need to automate calculations and solve complex problems pushed human thinking in a new direction, toward giving machines clear, step-by-step instructions.
This journey truly began with Ada Lovelace in the 1800s. She worked on a theoretical machine called the Analytical Engine, designed by Charles Babbage. While the machine itself was never fully built, Ada Lovelace wrote a set of instructions for it to calculate numbers. These instructions are widely considered the first computer program. What made her work special was that she understood a machine could do more than just math—it could follow logic.
As technology progressed into the 20th century, early computers started to become real. However, programming them was extremely difficult. Instructions had to be written in binary—long sequences of 0s and 1s. Only a few experts could understand and write such code, and even small mistakes could break everything. This created the need for a more human-friendly way to communicate with machines.
The first major step toward a true programming language came with assembly language. Instead of writing in raw binary, programmers could use simple symbols and short commands. While still complex, it was a huge improvement and marked the beginning of structured programming.
The real breakthrough came in the 1950s with the creation of FORTRAN. Developed by IBM, FORTRAN (short for Formula Translation) was the first widely used high-level programming language. It allowed programmers to write instructions using words and mathematical expressions instead of binary or assembly. This made programming faster, easier, and more accessible to scientists and engineers.
After FORTRAN, more languages began to emerge, each designed for different purposes. These early innovations laid the foundation for modern programming languages like Python and JavaScript, which are now used by millions of developers around the world.
The creation of the first coding language was not just a technical achievement—it was a turning point in human history.
